Artistic Statement

My photographic inspirations are derived from many different sources; the places in which I have resided across the world, the cultures I have immersed myself within, and the people with whom I have interacted. As a psychologist, I am particularly attuned to the psychology of self-presentation both of myself and the individuals with whom I interact. This psychology drives the gestalt of my photography and the images which I create are allegories of life often with hidden meanings. My artistic imagery has spanned a number of different photographic classifications; documentary, performance, street-life, photojournalism, architectural and portraiture. My most recent creative endeavors and passions are found within the realm of surrealistic photography; in particular the adaptation of surrealism primarily to Renaissance architecture in Italy. My work in this arena started in Bologna Italy and the bulk of my current work is derived from the 14th to 16th century architecture found there.
My surrealistic images communicate various states of emotions. These states are often captured through redefined architectural structures. Traditional architectural photography captures structures as entities that are motionless and at rest. They display compositions of permanence, regions of endurance and safe retreats. Surrealistic architectural photography is a diversion from the traditional photography of architecture and thus creates the foundation of my most recent photographic work.
In this surrealistic imagery I create two different visualizations. The first set of images paint architectural structures in dynamic reimagined restless states with unknown trajectories of movement and end points. They emphasize the vulnerability of the structures and by association of the individuals that occupy the space within.
The second set of imagery is more complex in its production and and interpretation. My images in this series are composed of 3-13 different layers of my photography that are layered in an attempt to portray a range of emotions in the final image. These emotions are grounded in a number of different themes such as understanding the challenges of transition and change, the value, protection and state of knowledge, and the importance of understanding the value of history to name a few. I am continuously looking for new themes where I can explore them in more depth through the surreal layered approach to my image production.
My goal in all of the images that I produce is to provide the viewer with a sense through which they can reflect on themselves and the world in which they exist.
My digital photographic images are professionally printed on Hahnemuhle German Etching Paper that is archivable and on Canvas with a wood backing ready for framing. A variety of sizes are available for purchase. For more information please send your query to my contact information contained on this site.
